How to open an existing document file
Using the “Office” button in the upper left corner of the
Word 2007 Screen,

select
“
”
from the list of options :

As
shown, pressing the <Control> key and the <O> key will accomplish
the same thing.
The “Open File” dialog opens to display files in the current
working folder :

The file’s extension may or may not be displayed as shown above.
By default, Microsoft
Windows has always hidden file extensions,
although a good reason for this has been been given.
Hiding file extensions makes
it difficult to determine
if a file is a document from a newer (.docx) version,
or from older (.doc) version of Word.
Since these extensions would not be displayed,
the user is left to guess which one is which.
To display file extensions, open any folder in Windows.
From the “Organize” button, click on
![]()
in the
list that is displayed :

Then select the “View” tab in the “Folder Options” dialog :

… and Un-check the “
”
option,
so that file extensions are now visible, as shown here :

Hiding
file extensions is a great way for hackers to
hide programs as picture and sound files,
because without visible file extensions,
the type of file is not obvious.
Here
is an example of a famous “Anna Kournikova Virus”
that was enabled by ![]()
