
Clearing Formats in Microsoft Excel
Sometimes,
we may want to remove all formatting from text.
Here,
we discuss how to remove or clear Formats from cells :
The features needed to
do this are on the Excel “Home” tab “ribbon” :

So, where is this “Clear Format” feature in Excel ?
If you’re familiar with Word 2007,
you might expect to find the “Clear Formats” feature on the “Fonts” tab.
But … it’s not there …
In Excel,
is it on the “Fonts” tab ? NO

NO, “Clear Format”
is not on the ‘Fonts’ tab as it is in Word.
Is it on
the “Format” button of the “Cells” tab ?

NO, “Clear Format”
is not on the ‘Cells’ tab, either !
It is on the “Clear” button of the “Editing” tab :

Hovering the mouse cursor over the “

Clicking the drop-down arrow of the “

button on the “Cells”
tab
will display what you need to clear formats from a cell :

Since the cell may contain formatted contents,
there are options to clear everything, or just the formatting,
or just the contents (so typing new text will be in the same format).
The
cell may have a comment associated with it,
and the last option deletes just the comments,
without changing the text or formatting of the cell itself:
